Oh my! There are a lot of events to report on this week! The always fabulous Asian Film Festival opens next week, there are all kinds of concerts and dance performances, a plethora of films and film discussions, several events with "Little Amal", talks and a symposium, scary theater performances, Lawn Programs, art and exhibit openings, and so much more! Buckle up!
Friday (today), Irish Music on the Commons, will feature Ben Jaber and Pete Polansky. At the California Center for the Arts, Art & Spirit: Día de los Muertos will be an evening of art, music, and remembrance. World Fair Gone Digital will be a presentation on the Turin 1911 Project. Banda Magda will perform at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. At the International Cottages, In Scena Italian Theater Festival will feature two films, My Idea and The Tightrope Walkers. At the Persian Cultural Center, Golden Time will be shown with a discussion after the film. The Azúcar Band will perform at the California Center for the Arts. The Hunchback of Notre Dame will open at the California Center for the Arts. There will be a Carnatic Vocal Concert at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living. Mexikolombia will perform at Boulevard Hall. Manuel Turizo will perform at the San Diego Civic Theater. The Argentine duo Pimpinela will perform at the Magnolia Performing Arts Center in El Cajon. French-American singer and songwriter Katleen will give a concert with the songs from her new album A Night in Paris.
Saturday and Sunday, the Old Town Día de Los Muertos celebration will take place. At the Chinese History Museum's Chuang Garden, there will be two performances of Asian Scary Theater on both Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday, there will be Día de Los Muertos celebrations at City Heights, Greenwood Memorial Park, and Chula Vista Memorial Park. The San Diego Shakespeare Society will present 2 afternoon shows of Spooky Shakespeare at the Museum of Photographic Arts. There will be a Capoeira Batizado at the WorldBeat Center. The Two Gentlemen of Verona will open at the Old Globe. There will be a book talk on Maria Ressa's How to Stand Up to a Dictator. The film Alborz: We Climb Mountains will be shown at UCSD. The film version of Faust will be shown at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Spring Valley. Samahan will present An Evening of Rondalla and Kulintang Music at the Mingei. There will be a Fireboat Festival at Wat Lao Buddharam. La Lucha Libre Mexicana will take place at Montgomery-Waller Recreation Center. The Museum of Art will hold an opening for their new exhibition Korea in Color, A Legacy of Auspicious Images. There will be an outdoor screen of the delightful film Coco.
Sunday, there will be Día de los Muertos celebrations at the Old Globe, Encinitas, Barrio Logan, and Poway. The House of Türkiye will hold their annual Lawn Program with speakers, live music (with the San Diego Turkish Music Chorus), dance, arts and crafts, food, and more. There will be a Bijaya Dashami Celebration at the Royal India. Akkarai Sisters vocal duo will perform Carnatic music at Seaside Center for Spiritual Living. Comedian Monique Marvez will be at Mic Drop Comedy. Puerto Rican reggae band Cultura Profetica will perform at The Sound.
Monday, at the Central Library there will be a Filipino Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. The Irish music group Fish Market Trio will perform at SDSU's Smith Recital Hall. The La Jolla Historical Society will host a screening of a Documentary about the Truffaut film Shoot the Piano Player. A discussion will follow.
Tuesday at the Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox Branch Library, violinist Nico Hueso will perform a repertoire of harvest songs and Día de Los Muertos–themed compositions.
Wednesday, the UCSD Institute of Arts & Humanities will hold a Dia de los Muertos Celebration. At the Mission Hills Library, there will be a hands-on Catrina Dolls and Other Crafts class. At UCSD, Professor Christian A. Thomsen will deliver a talk on Ancient Greek Voices. KPBS will host a special screening at CSUSM of the Women Rule episode from the upcoming PBS television series Native America. The Museum of Us will screen the documentary Crossings, followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem. A Hot Club Swing Night will happen at Blind Lady Ale House.
Next Thursday, the San Diego Asian Film Festival will begin, we can't wait! The San Diego World Affairs Council will host Le Ly Hayslip who will present a talk entitled Beyond the American Lens: The Legacy of War, Transgenerational Trauma, Reconciliation, and Healing. The La Jolla Community Center will hold a Día de los Muertos Celebration. At the Linda Vista Library, there will be a Día de Muertos Loteria event for kids. San Diego Latino Professionals will host a Día de los Muertos Mixer at the New Americans Museum. There will be a Día de los Muertos Celebration at Veterans Park in Imperial Beach. Ceres Madoo will discuss her mixed-media art at UCSD. At the La Jolla Riford Library, Angie Kim will talk about and sign copies of her new book Happiness Falls. At Market on 8th, the Filipino film Master Chief will be shown. At the Lawrence Family Jewish Cultural Center, authors Helene Stapinski and Bonnie Siegler will discuss their book The American Way: A True Story of Nazi Escape, Superman and Marilyn Monroe.
Next Friday at UCSD, there will be a Spanish Language reading and discussion with Miguel Ángel Oxlaj on Indigenous Voices. At the Salk Institute, there will be a symposium on Comparative Anthropogeny and Other Approaches to Human Origins. The marvelous Mariachi Juvenil will perform at JAI at the Conrad. You can enjoy the psychedelic sound of Peruvian cumbia will Sonido Gallo Negro at Quartyard. At the Rady Shell, there will be a performance of Amal, Step into My World by the puppetry troupe Animal Cracker Conspiracy. Amal is a 12-foot puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee child. She has become a global symbol of human rights,
especially those of refugees. There will be several events in San Diego where Amal will make an appearance. At MiraCosta College, they will have a screening of the documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World. The Mexican bands Liberacio and BXS will perform at the Civic Theatre. At the House of Pacific Relations Hall of Nations, the Scottish group The Tannahill Weavers will perform. Filipino rock band Chicosci will be playing at the Casbah. Mexican Mega pop group OV7 will perform at the SDSU Open Air Theatre.
Next Saturday, the Bonita Museum and Cultural Center will present their 2nd annual Gathering of Nations to celebrate indigenous cultures. The Calienté Latin Music, Food, and Spirits Festival will take place at Tears of War reading and discussion at the Central Library will include a unique performance highlighting the stories of seven refugee and asylee women. Oud master Yuval Ron will perform in La Jolla. At Chicano Park, there will be a performance of Amal & Sueños. At Liberty Station, there will be an opening for the Around The Way Girl art exhibit featuring works by Puerto Rican photographer, Delana Delgado. At South Mission Beach, there will be a performance of Little Amal, Wasted Ashore. At the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Italian Film Festival will host a double event with a Panel Discussion (including the Italian hip-hop artist Amir Issaa) to discuss Issaa's new book This Is What I Live For: An Afro-Italian Hip Hop Memoir and following that there will be a screening of the Italian comedy Scialla! (Easy!). Filipino-American stand-up comedian Ko Joy will be at the Pechanga Arena. Latin reggae, funk, and cumbia band SM Familia will play at the Holding Company.
Next Sunday and the JCC, there will be a screening of the film J'Accuse that will include a discussion with the film's two subjects, Silvia Foti and Grant Gochin, and the film's director Michael Kretzmer. The House of Lebanon will host their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages with music and dance performances and food. At the Oceanside Museum of Art, there will be a Persian Yalda Celebration will music and dance performances, poetry reading, storytelling, and more. At the California Center for the Arts, there will be a Kathak Dance performance featuring Vidushi Vidha lal. Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist La Doña will perform at the Soda Bar.
Local ongoing theatrical productions include Xanadu at the Coronado Playhouse, The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the California Center for the Arts and The Two Gentlemen of Verona at the Old Globe.
